OF OVERSIZE VEHICLES AND OBJECTS IN MICHIGAN
August 22, 2008
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has previously restricted movement of oversize vehicles on weekends. In order to become more consistent with surrounding states, MDOT has approved a one year pilot to allow vehicles to be permitted for weekend travel until 3:00 PM on Sunday for vehicles and/or objects up to and including 10 wide, 14 high and 90 in overall length, regardless of weight.
At the end of the pilot period MDOT will evaluate and determine whether continuing this type of movement is appropriate.
The weekend travel allowance will not be applied to modular or mobile home movement since section 257.719a (2)(5) of the Michigan Vehicle Code specifically prohibits it.
The Michigan Permit Administration and Routing System (MIPARS) computer application used by MDOT to issue permits will be reprogrammed to allow this movement automatically in the near future. If such movement is desired for single trip permits prior to the change, it is important to include a written request in theNotes section and click the box titled Weekend Move in MIPARS. For extended permits, the applicant must request weekend movement when application is made. This change will not be retroactively applied to previously issued permits.
